Resist the devil

January 5, 2018

My plate was full before I even woke up today. You know the feeling when half the things on your to-do list carry over into the next day? And that day already has a full list of its own? That's the feeling I had this morning, and my spirit wasn't ready to hear God's voice.

Day 5 - Genesis chapters 16-18 and Psalms 5

But, I didn't let that stop me from opening the Read Scripture app on my phone. I watched The Bible Project video about God's covenants, then read the chapters in Genesis and Psalms. But, my mind kept drifting to the tasks waiting for me to complete on this last business day of the week.

We really do have to clear the clutter from our minds if we want to hear from God. But just how do we go about doing that? Our to-do lists just keep growing and growing, while we keep getting more and more disconnected from what our spirits need...which is our Father's presence.

Then we have days where everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. My great-grandmother used to say, "The devil sure is busy!" But the book of James, in the New Testament, tells us to resist the devil and he will flee. So, today consisted of a lot of resisting. I resisted the urge to get frustrated. I resisted the urge to isolate myself. I resisted my natural tendency to be impatient. I resisted the urge to cry.

What did I do instead? I took a deep breath whenever I felt a knot in the pit of my stomach trying to form. I rocked and sang my grandbaby to sleep, instead of burying my head in paperwork. I laughed at my husband when he burst into the room, instead of being annoyed when her head popped up to see him. I picked up my granddaughter when she asked if she could sit with me, instead of saying, "Not now, honey, GG is busy." I talked to a friend on the phone who needed some moral support, instead of putting her off until another day.

Through all of this resisting, I was also able to cross some things off my list, and move others to tomorrow. What I wasn't able to do was write about the Scriptures today. I sat down at the end of the day, looked at my blank laptop screen for several minutes, then closed it. I announced to my family that I was going to bed. Good night!

But, then God used my son to bark some orders at me. "You can't give up. You can't quit. You just said last night that you were going to post every day. Don't let the devil get to you. There could be one person who really needs to hear what God puts on your heart. Sit back down and write. Even if you just write a paragraph. You can do it!"

So, here we are. What started as a paragraph is now a full-fledged blog post. Although it's not exactly about Abraham or Sarah, it is about what many of us go through every day trying to fulfill the promises we make to God and to ourselves. We all have days like today, so let's resist the devil when he throws darts at us, and wave bye when he flees. Meanwhile, we'll keep reading the Word every day, and listening for God's voice.

How do you push through when you have days like this? Feel free to comment below, or by visiting my Facebook page.
