Do you believe in coincidences? I don’t. For me, a coincidence is God’s way of winking at me and letting me know He’s present, He’s listening, He’s smiling, or He’s got my back.
So, I’m at home alone this evening, which is unusual. And, instead of writing or working on my taxes like I’m supposed to be doing, I find myself scrolling through the guide on TV. Again, this is a very unusual activity for me. I usually watch whatever is recorded on my DVR so that I can zip through the commercials.
But, for some reason I scrolled over to about an hour later and noticed a show coming on called Living Biblically. I thought it was one of those paid programming shows where somebody is giving a sermon.
Instead, I noticed that it was on CBS, and the description said it was a 30-minute sitcom. So out of curiosity, I hit the record button, turned off the TV, and proceeded to sit down to my laptop waiting for inspiration for tonight’s blog post about my Bible journey.
Day 57 – Deuteronomy chapters 13-14 and Psalms 57
I reviewed my notes on today’s chapters, but nothing jumped out at me. So, I put the laptop down, went into the kitchen, and prepared a late night snack. Why not? I was still in procrastination mode, so what’s another few minutes of satisfying my tummy before getting down to business.
Soon, I found myself back in front of the TV with my snack, watching the show I had just recorded. I wasn’t expecting much, after all it was the Pilot episode, which is another unusual circumstance. I normally don’t find out about a new show until well into the season because I don’t typically watch promos or scroll through the guide.
There were a couple of side-eye moments, but overall it was a delightful little sitcom. Surprisingly, I laughed out loud a couple of times. I’m not familiar with Jay R. Ferguson (the lead actor), but any show with Camryn Manheim, Sara Gilbert, and Tony Rock deserves a chance.
And, I’m glad I watched because even more coincidences (or God winks) showed up:
The show title, “Living Biblically,” happens to coincide with me "writing Biblically," so to speak.
The premise of the show is about a guy named Chip who wants to be a better man for his unborn child, so he commits to living according to the Bible, in detail. And, I want to be a better and stronger woman of faith, so I commit to reading the entire Bible this year.
Chip also happens to be a writer, like me.
His wife's name happens to be Leslie, like mine.
He’s a “lapsed Catholic,” and I was raised Catholic. The scenes with Chip in the confessional and lighting candles were like a flashback to my childhood.
Chip’s boss tells him she wants him to begin writing about his “Bible journey.” Yes, they used those words...the same words that I’ve been using this year on my blog.
Needless to say, this show has captured my attention, and I’ll be watching again in the coming weeks. So far, I don’t find it to be condescending, and I hope it continues to make viewers laugh..respectfully.
They did a great job of that in the scene where Chip had to decide whether to cover for his adulterous friend, or to stone him. I won’t spoil it for anyone who may not have seen it, but that scene had me rolling! Please check it out and let me know what you think in the comment section below, or by visiting my Facebook page.
