I have so many conflicting thoughts about what y’all are saying on social media these days. My unfollow game is super strong, but the angel on my shoulder keeps telling me to exercise a bit of grace. I want to leave but the Lord wants me to stay. And, so I obey.
I’m working very hard not to lose my peace over the lack of empathy being displayed at such a time as this by those who profess how much they love the Lord. When we wear the name of Jesus as a badge of honor, we must purpose to follow the examples He set for us. Is that what you’re doing when you twist the dagger that has been plunged into our backs by a society that we’ve given our blood, sweat, and tears to for centuries?
Why has your heart grown so cold? Where is your compassion for the grief and fear that plague an entire group of people? Why do you so brazenly call our people animals while coddling and making excuses for your own? Can’t you see? You are being manipulated. There are no sides here!
We are all in the same leaky boat!
This rocking vessel has taken on water to an increasingly disastrous level. The waves are crashing against us. And instead of joining forces to plug up the holes, we are folding our arms and turning our backs on each other. What kind of sense does this make? We’re all drowning!
We are supposed to be like Peter when he walked on water. Not when he cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant. Not when he denied Christ three times before the rooster crowed. But we should be like Peter when he stepped out of the boat and defied the laws of nature because he kept his eyes on Jesus, even if only for a moment. He didn’t begin to sink until he allowed his focus to shift towards the storm all around him.
So with all humility, here’s my ask.
Open your eyes. But not to the storm all around you that’s designed to distract you from what’s really going on. Open your eyes to the Gospel message of love, forgiveness, peace, long-suffering, joy, brotherhood, grace, charity, salvation. There’s nothing in the Message that we claim to follow that allows us to kick each other while we’re down. There’s nothing within those Red Letters that allows us to place another mere mortal above our own faith.
Some say these are the last days, and if this is true, then we should be able to recognize deception when we see it. We should be able to smell it from a mile away. Nation rising against nation should be an indicator to us not to spew hatred, but to resist the devil. It’s time to look up, and lift our heads, for our redemption is drawing near. Look up!
